Purpose and Mission

The purpose of the NC Housing Coalition is to educate the public about housing issues for low- and moderate-income households, and to lead an advocacy effort that empowers residents to impact housing needs and issues that affect their lives and those of North Carolinians across the state.  Our mission is to lead a campaign for housing that ensures working families, people in crisis, seniors and persons with disabilities may live with dignity and opportunity.

History

The NC Housing Coalition, formerly named the NC Low Income Housing Coalition, was formed by advocates in 1988 as a vehicle for bringing together members of service and housing production fields to share best practices and advocate for improved public policy-making.  These advocates first convened in 1987 to respond to diminishing federal funds and the increasing housing needs of the state's low- and moderate-income residents by lobbying for the NC Housing Trust Fund.  The Trust Fund was initially capitalized with $21 million from the NC Housing Trust and Oil Overcharge Act, but never secured a dedicated source of ongoing revenue.  The Fund is still in existence today and remains a cornerstone to North Carolina's affordable housing financing options and the Coalition's advocacy priorities.
