About Us

Incorporated in 1988, we are a network of housing and service providers, members of the faith community, civic and elected leaders, representatives of business and industry, and other advocates who believe that housing is a basic human need and the cornerstone of vibrant communities.

Our mission is to lead a campaign for housing to ensure that working families, people in crisis, seniors, and persons with disabilities may live with dignity and opportunity.
We work to accomplish our mission through the following activities:
- Advocacy: We provide the statewide voice for low-income North Carolinians in the General Assembly and with other key policymakers at national, state and local levels. We monitor programs and legislation and are leading a grassroots campaign to build an endowment for housing in North Carolina. - Member Support: We act as a clearinghouse on housing needs, available resources, and best practices in the field and organizations which provide specific assistance. We are in an ongoing process of developing a library of relevant research on the impact of affordable housing on surrounding property values. Click here for more information on this research. We provide in-depth technical assistance through workshops, research, multiple publications, and one-on-one advising.
- Outreach and Education: We raise public awareness about the critical need for and benefits of affordable housing. We take our message to the media, civic and religious organizations, corporations, and neighborhood groups across North Carolina. Learn about myths and perceptions of affordable housing here.
- Partnership Building: We act as a catalyst to bring together public and private interests. We utilize an advisory council of the state's major lenders and trade groups, called our Investors' Council, to bring their perspective to public policy discussions. We lead coalitions of interested organizations and business groups on issues such as foreclosure prevention, manufactured housing, and housing for persons with disabilities or other special needs. Our Annual Conference draws established and merging leaders in the nonprofit, private, and public sectors.
- CHIN (Carolina Homeless Information Network): CHIN is a collaboration between the Housing Coalition and the NC Coalition to End Homelessness to bring about a statewide information database of homeless service providers. This will serve local agency record-keeping needs as well as provide local, regional, and statewide unduplicated demographic data about NC's homeless population for the first time.
- HUD OTAG Program: As of 2007, HUD is no longer funding this program, although it is possible this may change. The OTAG program worked to develop a positive relationship between tenants and owners with expiring Section 8 properties in the Mark-to-Market program.
