NC Housing Trust Fund

The NC Housing Trust Fund has:

  • Improved housing for the state residents in most need, with nearly 85% of its investments serving North Carolinians earning less than 50% of median income;
  • Financed 19,947 new or rehabilitated homes and apartments;
  • Leveraged $669 million of housing development and preservation;
  • Generated 11,000 jobs and $96.6 million in local and state tax revenues;
  • Won three national awards;
  • Financed housing in all 100 of North Carolina’s counties;
  • Obtained widespread support from government officials, business leaders, housing advocates, and others with no funds used for the administration of the Trust Fund.

What does the NC Housing Trust Fund finance?

  • Development of supportive housing for homeless persons, individuals with physical and/or developmental disabilities, survivors of domestic violence and others;
  • Urgent repairs for very low-income homeowners;
  • Homeownership for low-income families;
  • Rental housing development for families and the elderly.

North Carolina’s housing need is severe.

  • Over 2 million North Carolinians live in homes they cannot afford.
  • Over 65% of renter households earning less than $20,000 cannot afford their rent.

Current resources are inadequate.

  • The NC Housing Trust Fund currently receives a recurring appropriation of only $10 million a year.
  • Other states have recognized housing trust funds as a means to spur economic activity and create jobs, while providing needed housing.  Examples include Washington State at $100 million, Ohio, where the trust fund was increased to $50 million per year in 2004; and Florida, where the trust fund receives nearly $250 million annually.

$50 million annually for the NC Housing Trust Fund will:

  • House over 6,000 households each year
  • Generate over 3,000 jobs each year
  • Increase state and local tax revenues by over $30 million each year
  • Leverage $200 million of housing development and preservation
  • Increase the NC Housing Trust Fund’s revolving loan fund through the recycling of future loan repayments

This effort will only be successful if more people are made aware of the crisis that currently confronts thousands – if not millions – of North Carolina’s families. Your help in this effort is critical. There are three ways you can get get involved right now:

  • Arrange to have a Campaign representative talk to your organization or group by email us.
  • Have your organization or group sign on as an endorser of the campaign.
  • Write a letter to the editor to your local newspaper in support of the Campaign by explaining the need for the state to invest more in the NC Housing Trust Fund.
