Campaign for Housing Carolina

CHC No Slogan

Now, more than ever...  Housing builds.

In the face of unsteady housing markets and an unsettled economy, the North Carolina Housing Trust Fund has proven its power to build communities, the economy and lives.

Your Investment in 2007 has paid off.

The General Assembly appropriated $18,937,500 to the Trust Fund in FY 2007. The entire appropriation had been committed to specific developments by year-end 2007. With this appropriation, the Trust Fund has delivered:

  • $94,763,500 in housing construction and rehab
  • $5 of housing produced for every $1 of state investment
  • 1,640 construction jobs
  • $16 million in local and state tax revenues
  • 1,103 homes and apartments.

The Trust Fund is the state's most flexible resource for housing for:

  • homeless families and individuals, victims of domestic violence, and people with disabilities.
  • elderly and disabled to continue living in their own homes.
  • high energy-efficiency and “green” standards
  • successful entry-level home ownership.

To reach its potential, the Trust Fund needs a substantial, reliable source of funds. It needs a substantial recurring appropriation in the 2008 Session, especially when funds are short and North Carolina's housing and economic challenges are great.  Our goal is to achieve minimum of $50 million in annual funding.

Now, more than ever, North Carolina needs decent, safe and affordable housing that the Trust Fund can build, given the necessary resources.

The $70 million invested in the Trust Fund over the last 20 years has created:

  • $597 million of housing construction and rehab
  • 18,870 homes and apartments
  • 10,000 construction jobs
  • $86 million in local and state tax revenues

In 2002, the NC Housing Coalition and the Center to Create Housing Opportunities developed the Campaign for Housing Carolina, a statewide public awareness campaign designed to bring attention to the necessary members of our communities who live in affordable housing. Based on a successful model from Minnesota, the campaign empowers local communities to work for change in their regions.

In the summer of 2004, the Housing Coalition brought together a core group of organizations to shift the Campaign to a more specific impact for our housing advocacy. The objective of the Campaign for Housing Carolina now is to build strong and widespread public support for a $50 million annual appropriation to the North Carolina Housing Trust Fund.

The Campaign for Housing Carolina is led by the NC Housing Coalition, NC Justice Center, United Way of NC, NC Coalition to End Homelessness, A.J. Fletcher Foundation, NC Association of CDCs, AARP-NC, NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence, ARC-NC, and with the support of the NC Housing Finance Agency.
