Community TIEs Awards

On October 17, the North Carolina Housing Coalition (NCHC) and the BlueCross and BlueShield of NC Foundation (BCBSNCF) presented three BCBSNCF Community TIEs Awards at the 2008 Annual Housing Conference.  The awards were presented to NCHC member organizations that diligently support affordable housing work across the state and demonstrate success in Technology, Innovation, and Evaluation.  Each organization received $10,000 in unrestricted funds to further support their work in affordable housing.

The 2008 Community TIEs Award for Technology was presented to SocialServe, Inc., based in Charlotte, for its website.  The website is the public portal to an extensive statewide housing database through which low- and moderate-income individuals can find decent and safe affordable housing in their communities.  The website is user-friendly and allows landlords to list their properties free of charge so that residents may have an accurate, up-to-date listing of available units.

NCHC and BCBSNCF presented the 2008 Award for Innovation to the Greensboro Housing Coalition (GHC) for its Healthy Homes Program.  The goal of the program is to cut the number of unsafe housing units in Greensboro in half within three years.  GHC has been very successful in bringing together stakeholders and reaching out to affected communities in collaborative efforts, resulting in over 4000 unsafe units repaired thus far.

The 2008 Award for Evaluation was presented to Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley (HFH-CV) for the ongoing analysis of its green building program.  HFH-CV installs EnergyStar appliances and partnered with Advanced Energy to guarantee each resident’s low monthly energy bill.  HFH-CV constantly evaluates the energy efficiency of its homes and modifies the program as needed.  In 2005, HFH-CV built the state’s first ‘Zero Energy House’ in partnership with Appalachian State University and continues to use its lessons learned to improve service delivery.

We are very appreciative of this opportunity to recognize some of the great work our member organizations are doing across the state.  All three of these groups have done groundbreaking work in NC that is impacting quality affordable housing in our state, said Chris Estes, Executive Director of the NC Housing Coalition.

The Annual Affordable Housing Conference was jointly sponsored by NCHC, Community Investment Corporation of NC, a subsidiary of the NC Bankers Association, and the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency.  Over 600 people attended the Conference from across the state including housing advocates, bankers, for-profit and nonprofit developers, community development corporations, local and state government officials and others from the many businesses and organizations that finance, build, and operate affordable housing in NC.

The North Carolina Housing Coalition is a private, nonprofit membership organization working for decent, safe, and affordable housing that promotes self-determination and stable communities.  NCHC works to increase the supply of affordable housing and improve consumer protections related to housing and wealth creation for low- to moderate-income North Carolinians and those with special needs.  The BlueCross and BlueShield of NC Foundation promotes the health and well-being for all North Carolinians through its responsive and proactive grant making programs in specific focus areas.  BCBSNCF initiated the Community TIEs program in 2004 as a way to recognize nonprofit member-based organizations in North Carolina striving to make a difference in their communities.  For more information on the Community TIES Awards, visit
