Foreclosure prevention counseling services are provided free of charge by nonprofit housing counseling agencies working in partnership with the Federal Government. These agencies are funded, in part, by HUD and NeighborWorks America.

Foreclosure Prevention Fund
Offers help to North Carolina homeowners who are struggling to make their mortgage payments due to job loss or other temporary financial hardship, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, or serious illness. The NC Foreclosure Prevention Fund is offered by the NC Housing Finance Agency, a self-supporting state agency, and funded through the US Department of the Treasury's Hardest Hit Fund. Services are provided by participating HUD-approved counseling agencies statewide.
Mortgage Payment Program
The Mortgage Payment Program provides mortgage payments at zero-interest loans
of up to $24,000 for a maximum of 24 months. Homeowners in the state's 50
"hardest hit" counties may qualify for up to $36,000 over 36
months.
The Second Mortgage Refinance Program helps employed homeowners who cannot
afford payments on their second mortgage. It will be available only to
homeowners in the 50
"hardest hit" counties, beginning June 2011. To find out more

State Home Foreclosure Prevention Project
The State Home Foreclosure Prevention Project (SHFPP) is a partnership led by the North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks. SHFPP coordinates HUD-approved housing counseling agencies, state and federal agencies, legal assistance organizations, mortgage servicers and community organizations to provide the resources you need to avoid foreclosure. Free help is available over the phone or in face-to-face settings for North Carolina homeowners that need assistance.

Making Home Affordable Program
The Obama Administration’s Making Home Affordable Program includes opportunities to modify or refinance your mortgage to make your monthly payments more affordable. It also includes the Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives Program for homeowners who are interested in a short sale or deed-in-lieu of foreclosure. The Homeowner's HOPE Hotline is available 24/7 by calling 1-888-995-HOPE (4673), by visiting their website, or beginning an Online Counseling Session.
Mortgage Foreclosure Defense Project
Legal services may be available to represent a borrower facing foreclosure through the Foreclosure Defense Project. Eligibility is limited to households earning 200% of the federal poverty level. The Foreclosure Defense Project is a joint project of six non-profit legal service agencies in North Carolina: Legal Aid of NC, Land Loss Prevention Project, Pisgah Legal Services, Legal Services of Southern Piedmont, Financial Protection Law Center and the NC Justice Center. Pro bono attorneys have also agreed to donate legal services as part of this effort. The borrower will be referred to an available attorney through the project. When calling, tell them that you are facing foreclosure.
